Iron ore long has been extracted from the Ural Mountains, and there appears to be a virtually unlimited supply of lowgrade ore in the Qostanay Basin east of the Southern Urals in northwestern Kazakhstan and southwestern Siberia. Large deposits of mediumgrade ore have been found northwest of Lake Baikal, close to the Cheremkhovo coal deposits.
