Traditional integrated steelworks use iron ore, coal, limestone, and oxygen or air to produce steel. The first step in this process is the conversion of coal to coke, a porous, strong, carbonrich material used in blast furnaces to provide most of the reducing power and heat required to reduce iron from iron oxides.
